The movie ends with Seth's grandpa Murdock making peace with Seth's Native America grandpa Andy, Seth is also introduced to his Native American uncle name Ted. Seth saves his injured grandpa by scaring off the bear and manages to themselves down the mountain side and to a neighbor who takes Seth's grandpa to the hospital. Seth helps his grandpa roundup his cattle and his grandpa Murdock comes face to face with the bear. Family members struggle to heal their emotional wounds after an incident of sexual abuse. The death of Seth's beloved grandma leaves Murdock and Seth on their own to work things out. The film's emphasis is on the pitiful conditions for Jewish refugees in Europe after the war, as antisemitism was still rife and poverty was. ![]() It depicts the plight of Jewish refugees after World War II that contributed to the creation of the State of Israel. It is interesting how that dream is used to convey Seth's struggle with his stern, bigoted, unfeeling grandpa who has told Seth basically that if he claims his Native heritage, then Seth is no grandson of his- that's harsh words for anyone, especially an impressionable 12 year old!
